Fishing Field Day Report, S Bend - September 2005

As you drive into the Greenough area you start to notice something unusual about some of the trees on the side of the road. They have grown vertical for a short distance and then horizontal for the rest of their length.

This weekend we experienced the conditions that made it possible for these trees to grow this way. Wind, Geraldton's often relentless sea breeze was with us for the entire weekend. There were some respites in the morning when the wind was down to about 10 knots but for most of the time it whistled in around 25 to 30 knots.

One of the byproducts of the constant wind was a plentiful supply of weed. Most spots north of nine mile were badly affected with either weed sitting on the bottom or suspended in the water column. Consequently good catches of weed of all description was had by all.

Of the eighteen members and guests who made the trip north, only 5 of us weighed in fish at the end of the weekend. However, the fish that were weighed in were of good size.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

Tony Ong had a good bag of tailor with the largest just over 2kgs. He also presented a good size school mulloway of around 4kgs. Tony reported that he returned eight just undersize mulloway over the weekend which is encouraging to see that younger stocks are in abundance.

George weighed in a couple of soapy mulloway along with three tailor. Past member Denis Green was one of the visitors for the weekend and weighed in a good size flathead. Tony D'Alonzo was up to his usual standard in bag weight with a couple of school mulloway of around 9kgs and some good tailor. Good to see new member Dion Damon along with three guests for the weekend. Unfortunately the combination of unfavorable conditions and the need to be back in Perth early meant that their catches were restricted to a couple of tailor.

The weekend was not a total disappointment by any measure. Most stayed at the S-Bend caravan park which has comfortable onsite caravan and chalets as well a well grassed camping area. The opportunity for the fishing group to stay together is not always available and all made use of the camaraderie, some however more so than others to the detriment of their head in the morning.

Even though it was not an overly fishy weekend for most of us, it is always good to get out of the city and onto a beach somewhere.

Hope to see you there next time. Malcolm Harris, Field Day Officer.

Species caught on this Field Day were:- herring, tailor, mulloway, flathead.
