Dry Casting Report October 2004

An early arrival had Willo and I setting up as the sun caressed the horizon. The wind was swirling all over the place, but it did to change to a tailwind during the later part of the day. These conditions caused a bit of havoc for the seniors during their distance casting.

A good turnout of club members and quite a few from other clubs to do some practice for the coming State titles had the Oval stretched. With the extra people in attendance George took leave to offer guidance and supervision. Let's hope it leads to plenty of competition and friendly rivalry at the State titles.

The vets hit the double handed court first up and couple of bull's-eyes had the competitors on notice that good scores were needed. I don't know how much of a stir it caused because Roy the Boy gave me a good run but the dark horse (no insult meant dear lady), our Vix had a steely look of determination and produced an outstanding score that was only a few points off with the club record. That smile was a delight to observe for the rest of the day.

The single-handed accuracy event had Tony and Terry sharing the limelight until I spoilt their party by fluking a win. The distance events went to a couple of blokes who gauged the windy conditions.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

I must admit that each month at casting I get the chance to stand alongside many great people and surely does give me great pleasure to observe their personal efforts and keep on trying, especially the ladies for when they get it right those beaming smiles are worth it. Being one of the old blokes doesn't give me a chance to join in with the young ones but I do glance over now and then when I hear the bawdy comments of or the cheers of success.

As the seniors hit the distance events first up they had to contend with some quite blustery winds which caused a few out of bounds. Still it takes skill to adjust and the rewards went to Chas and Mal. I did hear that clanger that Gary obtained in the double handed accuracy event and was told later that he had to change the sinker as it was shaped like a banana.

I also heard a reel scream its head off as if under a lot of stress but was told that a certain caster had failed to maintain his equipment as per his normal requirements and was a little embarrassed.

Bull's-eyes to George, Mal and Aubs in the single-handed accuracy put so much pressure on Willo that he washed out (what no money floating around?). I wonder if old "hopalong" is creating a new standard for single-handed accuracy as the angle of the dangle has others imitating him.

The snaggers went down well at the end of the day, the gear was collected by willing helpers and everyone was on their way by 1 pm. Another great day.

Thanks to Chas for entering the scores into the spreadsheet.

Hendo.
