Cervantes - Jurien Fishing Field Day - October 2002.

My fishing partner for this field day was Morris Kolman + Hunter. For the information of new members, Hunter is my Border Collie. I was looking forward with anticipation to the Cervantes field day. The October field day is usually the first FD that we see each year with our summer weather pattern of afternoon sea breezes and easterly winds in the morning. The Cervantes / Hill River area has produced good bags on most occasions over the years.

We arrived at Cervantes and had a good feed at the road house. At 11:55 there was no sign of any members and I started to wonder if I had mixed up the sign on location and time. On the dot of 12:00 George and his son Heath arrived, as did Tony and Filomena D'Alonzo.

After the sign on Tony headed for his usual location half way between Black Peak and the Hill River mouth. Morris and I checked out most of the locations and after Tony's spot decided that Black Peak was a good option. George and Heath decided to join us there.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

After setting up camp we started fishing in earnest. By about 17:00 our score was about three large North West Blowfish EACH. They particularly took a fancy to George's special rig of a styrene blob wrapped with squid and bound with string on a wire trace. Each cast resulted in a NW Blowfish or no bait and a shredded wire trace.

John Romano turned up about this time and also got hit by the NW blowfish Bonanza. There where lots of dark mutterings and talk about going to see how Tony was faring. We should have taken our own advice!!

Towards sunset some small tailor arrived and a few where caught. We all packed it in about 20:00 hrs and retired to a good feed and some refreshments. Heath set a big bait out in front of camp and was rewarded after some time by hooking a nice whaler shark.

Sunday morning the weather was fine and light winds and again we fished hard. No blowfish in evidence but only a couple of tailor where caught and none of the usual small species.

At the weigh in we where all both a bit wide eyed with admiration and envious as Tony selected his best fish for the scales. Again well done, Tony. I wish I had half your skill.

I was expecting a large turn out at Cervantes and wonder why so few members turned up? Cervantes is a good location close to Perth and the results are normally excellent. We may have been a month early for the tailor. The next field day includes the Wedge Island area, which can also produce good catches of tailor and other smaller species.

Hope to see a good roll up.

Tight Lines. Cookie and "Hunter"

Spencer King fished "local" and caught two nice Salmon (in October!) and a small gummy shark. His heaviest salmon of 4.475kg is the heaviest scale fish for the first six months, so Spencer is all smiles. But it missed out being eligible for a Grand Masters fish by just 25 grams.

Results.
