Around March 2000 the drycasting group started a serious move to get together casters interested in competing in the drycasting division of the Kangaroo Island (SA) National Championships. After a lot of endeavour, the following came forward to represent the WA Division of the Australian Anglers Association. These are now all members of the Club.

Bob Henderson | Roy Killick |
George Holman (Captain) | Jim Strong |
Garry Gildersleeves | Trevor Stam |
Chas Riegert | Morris Kolman |

A lot of work was put in by all to prepare themselves for the competition and a good bond was noticed amongst the group, which was very evident during the actual event.
The organising of accommodation in Pandana where the casting took place, the transport and packaging of the rods to Pandana, and also air fares to Adelaide and then on to Kangaroo Island (thanks to Nick Allsworth at a discount rate), a hire car to help out with transport, the work done by Bob Henderson (State Captain) and Morris Kolman who arrived early on the island by their own transport to pre organise things for the arrival of the other casters, and a friend they made named Bill who was like one of the group, all contributed to a very successful conclusion. It was great to see everything fall into place and make the whole plan work.
The remaining eight casters flew out from Perth on the 17th March and were home again on the 22nd. I know they all enjoyed the event, the comradery, the location and the hospitality of the South Australians and they made many friends and learnt heaps!!
I was personally pleased to see the way they all worked together, encouraged one another, helped out beyond normal and the comradery was the binding factor which is something very special and it takes occasions like this to make it happen.
With all this in place it was only natural that the group would have a good deal of success and this happened.
In the teams, the Veterans ran fifth and the Men's ran second by 278.90 to 275.97 percent.
Roy Killick led the way in the Veterans individual by running second to Ross Garvin (who is a very experienced caster) and Roy's effort was particularly creditable as he was 15 years Ross' senior and finished second in a field of 33 Veterans and it was his first National event!! Roy also had his longest cast of 151.49 metres.
Chas Riegert with a score of 152 out of 200 and Garry Gildersleeves 151 led the field in the Mens accuracy and the team finished first in this event. We also won the 112 gram artificial bait event, but the 56 gram proved the downfall of our Mens team. Joe Pullella finished top in the teams artificial bait event, which was a great achievement. Joe also had the longest cast in the individual event with 155.60 metres and beat "the gun" Ian Cameron 154.54 metres.
Longest cast for the tournament went to Ian Cameron NSW) who broke the 200 metre barrier for the first time in a National event with a cast of 200.67 metres. George Holman was second with 196.24 metres and Joe Pullella third with 193.78 metres.
Bob Henderson had a personal best of 163.46 metres, and he didn't stop smiling!! Nick Allsworth was our most consistent caster with a lot of personal bests, which saw him finish second to Ian Cameron. George Holman finished third, Chas Riegert fourth and Joe Pullella fifth in a field of forty six which showed the strength of the WA casting.
The South Australian casting organisers did a good job in running the event, which saw great weather on the first day and the opposite on the second with the result that only one of the individual 112 gram artificial bait casts was conducted. The cooperation and willingness of all casters to help out was great to see and the tact and guidance displayed by all State Captains was beneficial to all.
The plastic tube on our sinkers was very well received and its value in sighting and safety was noticed and as a result all future casting events will see all competitors using fluoro pink tube.
In summary I was honoured to be associated with a fine bunch of guys who truly represented our State in a most fitting manner and the comradery and encouragement displayed by all is something to cherish.
Thanks guys for everything, see you all at Yamba in New South Wales in 2003
George Holman.
