Rottnest - no, local field day report May 2003.

It was just like the May Rottnest field day last year. It rained and it blew except this time it was worse. We all knew the bad weather was coming and had decided to just grit our teeth and bear it. What we didn't expect was the high seas to wipe out Narrow neck and access to the west end of Rottnest. The high tide was 1.97 metre on Friday.

So late Friday afternoon Ross had the unenviable task of informing everyone that they now had the opportunity to attend to all those odd jobs around the house. Faced with this awful truth, Vix and I decided to try local. Paul Thompson had reported that Floreat was a wipe out with the surf breaking a long way out and dirty water extending even further, which meant that all that coast line was probably going to be the same.

At Paul's suggestion the three of us headed to Point Peron to escape the wind. We fished the rocks at the very end of the point. There is some seriously fishy water out there, deep water, low reef and patches of white water, it screamed tailor. But all the tailor and every other fish had screamed off some place else. Not even a herring was caught between us. Paul thrashed the water with lures while Vix and I did the same with baits. Weighing in was not going to be an issue for us.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

The only person to weigh in was Tony, who managed to bag his usual 30 fish, mostly herring with one tailor and a flathead. This makes the allocation of points for this month quite easy, not something I would like to see again.

A consolation to all this is that the next field day is Emu Springs which is only a couple of weeks away and we're about due for some good weather.

Hope to see you on the beach next time. Malcolm Harris, Field Day Officer.
