Dry Casting Report March 2004

Balmy autumn days are beautiful. Except for some wind, this months casting looked to be nearly perfect. Everyone was careful NOT to mention "those damn easterlies" and low and behold, the wind came from the south east and gradually swung around to the south.

Yes we had a little competition from the weather, but nothing like the past.

Hendo and Willow had the fields laid out by the time I arrived at 7:15 am. The die was rolled and groups 1 for the veterans/ladies and group 3 for the seniors rolled out. Single-handed rolled a group 3 as well. In a matter of minutes, the accuracy court was ready to go.

As I was warming up a little at the accuracy, a familiar face from Yamba turned up. Michael Bailey from South Australia was over visiting with his lady and had decided to join us for a morning's casting. Veterans kicked off on the distance with nine gents, two ladies and a junior going at it. A meagre seven seniors competed for the days honours.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

The old fox Holman set the early pace with an accuracy score of 159, closely followed by the eagle eyed Gilders on 154. The only other person in close proximity was Hendo in the veterans with 157. Excellent casting gentlemen.

Things were moving along smoothly as we then headed for the distance 'V' court to see if the day would be as beneficial as we thought. The distances cast were very good with the longest of the day at 173 metres.

What was of interest was the casting style of Mick Bailey. His style was reminiscent of Ian Cameron's at the Nationals in Yamba, but not quite the same. Still, his distances of 155 and 161 metres with a borrowed rod and reel were most impressive.

By the time that we got into 56 grams, the wind was a little fickle. It couldn't make up its mind to blow or not, or from where it would come from. If you got to the mark at the right time, all well and good. If not, too bad. I cracked a pigeon pair of casts right on 160 metres, which left me feeling real good and well in front of the field.

Notably missing this day was Nick Allsworth and Joe Pullella. I had spoken to Joe earlier in the week and was expecting him to be there (especially as he had the bottom section of one of my rods he was to be returning). Not to worry, now I will just have to go and get it.

Only one month left on the 2003-2004 casting calendar. Who has kept ALL their Reel Talks and can work out from the casting results who the section winners are? Anyone want to run a book on the results? I promise I won't enter... It might just be interesting.

Anyway, that's just about it for this month. The statistics are all listed below for all to peruse. For those who didn't want to or had other commitments, the sausage sizzle at Willo's place around the corner after casting was superb. Mrs Willo put on a feast extraordinaire. An absolute culinary delight. WELL DONE Lyn and thank you for your hospitality.

Until next time, stay safe. TT2 DCO
