The 2002 Cape to Cape Field Day was postponed to this weekend because of the rather dire conditions forecast for the designated
weekend. This however was no guarantee that the weather would play along. As it turned out the weather on the Saturday was
cloudy and windy with strong swell running. A few brave souls were at the sign-on including Malcolm Harris, Vix Alexander,
George Holman, Ken Black, Tony D'Alonzo and Ben and Colin Lilburne. With the formalities completed they dispersed far and
wide in search of fishable water.
Tony D'Alonzo told me it was more of a survival course than a fishing expedition with many spots wiped out or too dangerous
to try. He described some pretty atrocious swells and acres of white water making any fishing difficult.
However the Surfcasters are a redoubtable bunch and set about catching what they could in the adverse conditions. Malcolm and
Vix managed a few skippy and herring between them. George Holman did well to catch five species including herring, flathead,
bream, blackfish and a leatherjacket.
