I was looking forward to the open field day as it meant that I could go down to Garden Island to fish the back beaches with Chas and one of his mates. Waking up on Saturday morning confirmed one thing. It was going to be very windy! (Nothing new there.) Well we began fishing about 3 that afternoon and within the first few casts, Chas caught several nice tailor on a metal slice. We were all pretty happy and were hoping that there were a few fish around.
Well 5 hours later we gave up hope of even catching a herring, so we headed to the inside of the island to fish the small ships harbour. We started fishing off some rocks, before heading to the jetty to see if we could land a pink snapper or two (the navy guys catch them quite regularly). Well we ended up catching about half a dozen snapper, but unfortunately they were all undersize. We gave up about midnight and headed home.
We awoke early Sunday morning and decided to fish Trigg reef in the hope that we might land a nice tailor or two. Well Chas landed a small chopper, but the big tailor, which Trigg in renowned for, decided they didn't want to join us that morning.

Tony D'Alonzo won the field day. He fished Wagoe area and landed some good dart, tailor and other species. He weighed in 8 species, which is really a good effort.
It was nice to see a few people stay local and although catches weren't huge (probably due to the weather) people seemed to enjoy themselves.
Remember field days aren't there just for the sake of competition, they're also there so you get to fish good areas, go fishing with mates and have a great time.

It should be noted that many members are now choosing to fish for the sport and not the competition. These members are following the catch and release ethic, and although they choose not to weigh in, it doesn't mean they are not catching plenty of fish. New competition rules in 2001/2002 will allow them to catch and release and still get field day points.
