Open Fishing Field Day - February 2003.

Another open field day, I could hear all those places that we haven't fished to yet calling to me. However the opportunity to explore new territory received a reality check by the need to say gainfully self employed, so local it had to be for Vix and I.

With only Saturday afternoon/night available, we decided on the Swanbourne drain. We had been a couple of times before and not done so well, but for all that it looks good and there are stories of good catches there from time to time.

Being a pleasant afternoon we were not the only ones to occupy the beach and as it is a nudist beach, most of the others were scantily clad indeed. Complete with back pack, reef bag and rod each, we felt very much overdressed as we wove our way along the shore line.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

The fishing was slow until well after sundown. A few tailor showed up but they had to compete with a hoard of juvenile tarwhine that had taken up station and stripped our baits as fast as we could throw them at them. A pleasant surprise amongst the pickers were a few fat yellow fin whiting which helped to fill out our meager catch.

Bob led a group to Floreat with basically the same result as us, but then moved to the Swan River where he landed a very nice black bream. Chas and Spencer both ended their night in frustration with Chas being bitten off three times and Spencer losing a good fish to a line break.

Ross and Julie also fished their local waters down at Coogee with a good bag of tailor, herring and tarwhine.

It seems that at every opportunity that he gets, Tony heads north to Wago. It is not hard to understand why when he consistently weighs in impressive catches such as this one. Over twenty four kilos of fish which comprised tailor, tarwhine, dart, cod and topped off by a twelve and a half kilo cobia. He has shown us all a clean pair of heels again.

Next month's field day is the big one, Bluff Creek. Run over the long weekend (only a few days away now), it would have to rate right up there at the top for a fantastic weekend away. Great camping alongside the creek, long white sandy beach bounded on each end by granite headlands, good fishing, what could be better?

Hope to see you on the beach next time. Malcolm Harris, Field Day Officer.

Results.
