Surf Casting and Angling Club of W.A. (Inc.) Lancelin to Cervantes Fishing Field Day - November 2002.

"Try the steak burger" was the recommendation, which when taken up proved to be the start of a very agreeable weekend. We had arrived at the Shell service station (now BP) for the sign on. With the split location of Lancelin to Wedge Island and Cervantes/Hill River quickly and amicably sorted out at the General Meeting, the field day was off to a promising start. One party was to fish around Wedge Island and the remainder to concentrate on Hill River with a combined weigh in at George Holman's place on the Sunday afternoon. Vix and I opted for Hill River, which was a first for us so George very kindly showed the Romano family and us a few of the spots on the way up to the mouth of Hill River. A comment from George that there may be some underground seepage from the closed off river into the sea was enough reason for us to try our luck at the mouth.

The sea breeze was well and truly established by the time we had selected our camp site and got ourselves onto the beach. Doubts about the sanity of having to stand at a 15 degree angle into the wind in order to remain stable were soon set aside by some immediate action. Second cast from me received a good strike but no hook up however the third cast from Vix resulted in a nice tailor of about 1kg. Well with this kind of start we will have our bag in no time.

Wrong, the next fish took two and a half hours to show up, but when he did he brought quite few of his mates along as well. It was a frenzied session for a while, I bagged out with eight good tailor but unfortunately Vix had five in the bag when she encountered a wandering steam train that tried it's best to pull her arms off. By the time the eagle ray was beached and released the tailor had moved on. The wind died off towards evening along with the fishing action, but none the less it was a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday night.

In the morning, herring were in plague proportions along with a smattering of whiting and Tarwhine. Time to pack up and head off came too quickly, so it was back to the service station for a fortifying bacon and egg sandwich and a catch up with the others.

We seemed to have fared better in numbers than most, although there was a good flounder from Andrew Stoeckel and what turned out to be the heaviest tailor from Ric Parker. Tony was not present at the gathering, he had moved off to one of his other locations during the night and we could only guess what he may have in his bag.

We all gathered at the back of George's place for a very social weigh in. It was particularly successful in that it gave an opportunity for the people who had fished locally to attend as well as a couple of visitors. No surprise to see the variety and quantity of fish that Tony weighed in, with a mulloway to cap it off. Terry Willison shot up the ranking with his presentation of a healthy mixed bag, although he did have to endure the slings and arrows of his very jealous compatriots.

All in all a most enjoyable field trip, Cervantes is far enough to be well away from the madding crowd, but still within an easy drive of the metro area. Throw in a relatively straightforward 4 wheel drive component and you have memorable weekend.
