Surf Casting and Angling Club of W.A. (Inc.) May 2001 Fishing Field Day at Rottnest.

A tailor a cast! I think that's about the best way to describe the fishing at Rottnest's Radar Reef on the Surf Casting and Angling Club's May Field Day. I was lucky enough to be first one to the tailor hole. I had suited up back at camp and was straight into the water when we arrived. By the time Pete Brightman had put on his wet suit and joined me, I already had five tailor under my belt. He soon caught up though, catching all of his tailor on popper. I switched from bait casting mulies to throwing a popper for the remainder of my eight fish bag limit and then, about 30 minutes after starting fishing, went in search of something else to catch.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

Ian Taggart and several others fished Wilson's Bay where the action was slower, but still good fishing. Several of the guys from Wilson's made their way up to the Tailor Hole and caught their tailor in no time.

Another group had chosen to fish Cathedrals, but the action there was slow and the conditions a bit on the hairy side, so eventually they pitched up at Radar and joined the action there.

Chas Riegert and one or two others had elected to fish from the rocks at the West End. This certainly paid off for Chas who landed a beautiful Yellowtail Kingfish of about eight kilos on a raider lure. No mean feat given the rugged surroundings and the brilliant fighting abilities of these fish. This turned out to be by far the best fish of the trip. Click on the image for a larger view.

After a hard day fishing on the Saturday, several of our party decided to opt for a lie in on the Sunday, rather than venture out again. As it turned out they were the smart ones. Sunday produced very few fish. The tide was too high to fish the reefs where we'd had so much success on the Saturday and the various rocks and beaches just didn't preduce the goods. Darren Batchelor was the only one who had any success and managed to find some hot tailor action at Parker Point. The lack of fish combined with heavy rainfall left the rest of us wishing that we'd stayed in bed as well.

Herring were plentiful for those who wanted them, but skippy were very hard to come by with only two being caught for the weekend.

I caught one salmon of about 2.5 kilos on a herring livebait and Andy Griffiths had one from Cathedral Rocks. They were the only two Salmon caught, despite the recent salmon run reaching the metropolitan area.

There were the usual wrasse caught and released and several good sized blackfish weighed in. John Jardine kept and weighed in six of about a dozen tarwhine that he caught and Bob Henderson had a nice King George Whiting of 0.8 kilos.

All in all a great field day despite some very dodgy weather on Sunday morning.

Attendance points to be added to the above scores. It should be noted that many members are now choosing to fish for the sport and not the competition. These members are following the catch and release ethic, and although they choose not to weigh in, it doesn't mean they are not catching plenty of fish. Competition rules in 2001/2002 allow them to catch and release and still get field day points.
