Movie and still images of George Holman distance casting pendulum style, dry casting February 2008

This page has been prepared by website editor Terry Fuller to demonstrate the possibilities for using a video camera to record members' and visitors' dry casting as a training and education aid, and as a service to our members and visitors by showing different casting styles and analysing members' casting actions to improve performance.

Preparation for this page has researched some of the many steps needed from videotaping someone casting, using an ordinary consumer quality video camera, to being able to extract the video and still images and post them to a website, or prepare them in a format which can be used in training sessions at club meetings, for example.

All videos and still images are from standard definition videos, 5 x 4 aspect ratio, 720 x 576 pixels, taken by Terry Fuller with a privately owned digital video camera purchased in 2003.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

Current generation (2009) consumer video equipment should be able to produce wide screen and higher resolution images if required.

Several different software packages, each with several settings, are needed for the conversions from a video in a camera to the movie and stills you see here.

Movie of George Holman distance casting pendulum style, February 2008 2.2 Megabyte file in Windows Movie format. (opens in a new window)

Here are selected still images extracted from the video to show some of the later stages of the cast, and demonstrate that reasonable quality and usable stills can be extracted.

The time is shown at the bottom of each image to allow the elapsed time between stills to be calculated, and find these in the video. Some stills have not been shown because they are very similar to previous ones due to pauses or steps in the casting action and/or camera position.
