April 2002 Open Fishing Field Day, Easter 30/31 March, 1 April 2002.

The Open Field Day fell on the Easter weekend and this seems to have limited the number of anglers participating. Darren Batchelor and Spencer King traveled south to the Conto's Springs areas and while Darren caught a few salmon, the fishing overall was very slow and the wind from a very unfavourable quarter. With the usual spots crowded with other anglers and the fish off the bite, they decided to give it away and headed home early without weighing in.

George Holman fished locally for a few tailor, a herring and a pike.

Tony D'Alonzo put in the effort and went north to Wagoe Beach. Here the fishing was also rather slow and the swell increasing. As one would expect Tony managed a good bag of fish before retreating in the face of increasingly dangerous conditions.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

A great capture of a 12.8 kg Spanish Mackerel on a bottom bait at night was a distinct highlight. Fishing the second day in the S-bend/Greenough area yielded more fish and although there were no other large fish captured, Tony had a bag of 8 species and was a clear winner.

That concludes the Field Day competition for the 2001/2002 season. We kick off the next season with the traditional Rottnest May Field Day. I hope to see you there.

John Jardine, Field Day Officer.
